- Attachment patterns and suicidal behaviours on higher education studentsPublication . Gonçalves, Amadeu; Duarte, João; Sequeira, Carlos; Cabral, Lídia; Freitas, PaulaIntroduction: Every individual has a necessity to establish affective relationships throughout life in order to feel comfort and support. This need is called attachment and allows the human being to explore the world, acquiring knowledge about himself and everyone else.1 There are several changes that occur on students’ lives when enrolling and attending university, a period that is known to include a set of situational and academic transitions which might lead to mental health problems, and thus making students more vulnerable and more prone to develop suicidal behaviours. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation on higher education students and to assess its relationship with attachment patterns. Methods: Quantitative, descriptive and correlational study, applied on a sample of 1074 students from a Portuguese higher education institution. Data collection was possible through an online platform that included a survey with questions regarding sociodemographical and academic proiling, the Portuguese version of the Adult Attachment Scale (EVA)2 and the Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire.3 Results: Students’ age varies between the 17 and 49 (−x = 23.9 years old ± 6.107 Sd), the vast majority (64.7%) are females. Results show that the presence/severity of suicidal thoughts is low (−x = 13.84; ± 20.29 Sd) on a scale from 0 to 180 and cut-off point > 41 for values that suggest potential suicidal risk, and based on that, 84 students were identiied (7.8%). We veriied signiicant relationships between suicidal ideation and anxiety and attachment (r = 0.314; P = .000). Conclusions: Although there is not a high prevalence of suicidal ideation on students, we found 84 students in our sample (7.8%) that reveal a potential risk for suicide. The results also show that young students with safe attachment patterns display less suicidal ideation. Safe attachment patterns are essential on interpersonal and social relationships and play an important role during the academic period. We cannot be indifferent towards this issue due to its individual, familiar and social repercussions. Every higher education institution should then establish student support ofices and develop mental health promotion programs as well as suicide prevention campaigns.
- Construction and Validation of the Positive Mental Health Literacy Assessment Scale in AdultsPublication . Chaves, Cláudia; Duarte, João; Sampaio, Francisco; Coelho, Joana; Gonçalves, Amadeu; Santos, Vanda; Sequeira, CarlosLow mental health literacy levels have a profound negative effect on healthcare outcomes, usage of healthcare services and healthcare expenditure. To date, there is little research and a lack of instruments available to address and assess positive mental health literacy levels in community-dwelling adults. Thus, this study sought to develop an instrument to assess positive mental health literacy in adults and to evaluate its psychometric properties. A scale developed in European Portuguese and composed of 32 items was designed to assess positive mental health literacy among community-dwelling adults and was validated using exploratory factor analysis. Five latent factors were identified (decision making, prosocial attitudes, perception of resources, community involvement, and problem solving), whose hypothesised structure was confirmed by confirmatory factor analysis using structural equation modelling. Evidence showed that the scale’s factor structure is reliable and valid and adequately represents the theorised constructs. Thus, this may be a useful assessment tool for clinical practice since it will allow a more rigorous assessment of positive mental health literacy and better mental health promotion interventions in the population.

- Development of a questionnaire to assess people’s food choices determinantsPublication . Ferrão, Ana C.; Guiné, Raquel P.F.; Correia, Paula; Ferreira, Manuela; Duarte, João; Lima, JoãoBackground: Diet and nutrition are major determinants of public health and are associated with a large number of diseases. Therefore, in order to plan actions to promote global health, it is crucial to understand people’s food choices. Objective: The aim of this study was the development and validation of a new instrument, a questionnaire to measure psycho-social motivations associated with food choices and eating practices. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was undertaken on a non-probabilistic sample of 382 adult participants. The questionnaires were applied after informed consent only to adults (aged 18 or over) and the data were collected from January to April 2017 among the Portuguese population. The analysis has been conducted to explore the item-item correlation and the reliability of this new instrument. Results: The results indicated satisfactory correlations between the items of the different variables, except for Variable D (Social and cultural motivations) that did not show strong and significant correlations for almost any items. Considering all the items in each of the variables studied, Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from 0.32 for the marketing and commercial motivations to 0.64 for the economical and availability motivations. When some items were removed from the variables, the values of Cronbach’s alpha increased and ranged from 0.66 for social and cultural motivations to 0.78 for health, environmental and political motivations, and for marketing and commercial motivations. Conclusion: This work suggested that this questionnaire could be considered a suitable tool for exploring food choice determinants.

- Interventions for Caregivers of Heart Disease Patients in Rehabilitation: Scoping ReviewPublication . Loureiro, Maria; Parola, Vítor; Duarte, João; Mendes, Eugénia; Oliveira, Isabel; Coutinho, Gonçalo; Martins, MM; Novo, AndréMap the interventions/components directed to the caregivers of heart disease patients in cardiac rehabilitation programs that promote their role and health. Methods: The Joanna Briggs Institute method was used to guide this scoping review. Two independent reviewers assessed articles for relevance and extracted and synthesized data. Inclusion criteria comprised articles published in English, Spanish, and Portuguese since 1950. The following databases were searched: CINAHL Complete (Via EBSCO), Medline (via PubMed), Scopus, PEDro, and Repositórios Científicos de Acesso Aberto de Portugal (RCAAP). Results: From 351 articles retrieved, 10 were included in the review. The interventions identified directed to the caregiver were: educational interventions and lifestyle changes; physical exercise; psychological interventions/stress management; and a category “Other” with training interventions in basic life support, elaboration of guidelines/recommendations, and training for the role of caregiver. Conclusions: It was found that most of the related cardiac rehabilitation interventions are aimed at the dyad heart failure patient and their caregivers/family. Including specific interventions targeting caregivers improves the caregiver’s health and empowers them. Patient care planning should include interventions specifically aimed at them that result in health gains for caregivers and patients, striving to improve the quality of care.
