- An Algorithm Proposal To Oral Feeding In Premature InfantsPublication . Neto, Florbela; França, Ana Paula; Cruz, SandraThe transition from tube feeding, to oral feeding is one of the most difficult for preterm infants. It’s a continuous but slow process, which demands physiological development respiratory independence and the ability to coordinate suction, breathing and swallowing. Getting the premature to develop his/her feeding skills is the big challenge to the professionals that work in the NICU. Know the characteristics of preterm infants, essentials for oral feeding; to know the nurses’ opinion on nursing interventions, that promote the transition of gavage feeding for oral feeding in preterm infants; to contribute to the development of a proposal for a guide to oral feeding in preterm infants were our objectives. As a methodology, qualitative, exploratory and descriptive study. Semistructured interviews were performed to neonatal nurses. Content analysis to treat data was used. Results - Weight, gestational age, physiological stability, sucking coordination, swallowing and breathing, and feeding involvement, are fundamental parameters to begin oral feeding. Positioning the baby, reflexes stimulation, control stress levels, monitoring the temperature and the milk flow, are nursing interventions that promotes the development of feeding skills. The existence of a guide not only gives security but also promotes the respect for the developmental stages of the preterm infant, the standard of care, encourages learning, reduces the subjectivity and fosters the evidence based practice, nevertheless, it ought to have a simple structure, be practical/judicious and small. An algorithm for the preterm infants oral feeding was developed grounded on nurses’ opinion but also in the best available evidence.

- Clinical Supervision and Emotional Intelligence Capabilities: E Excellence in Clinical PracticePublication . Cruz, Sandra; Carvalho, António Luís; Sousa, P.We carried out a study to relate the implementation of a clinical supervision (CS) model with the supervised nurses’ emotional intelligence capabilities. 38 paired questionnaires with the Portuguese version of the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale© (MCSS©) and the Veiga Branco Emotional Intelligence Capabilities Scale (VBEICS©) were obtained. SPSS© version 18.0 was used to treat data. We verified a significant weak correlation between the ‘self-motivation’ subscale of the VBEICS© and the ‘personal issues’ subscale of the MCSS© (-0,386). Our study pointed out that when the supervised nurses were more self-motivated they discussed less personal issues.
- Clinical supervision in nursing: effective pathway to qualityPublication . Cruz, SandraEffects of clinical supervision on the quality of care are a key aspect in the improvement of quality and they were defined as target area by the World Health Organization (Hyrkäs & Lethi, 2003). The aim of this exploratory, descriptive and longitudinal study was to develop a clinical supervision in nursing model that bestsupports the nurses’ professional practice. The research was done in several health institutions. With this article we pretend to publicize the results of the application of the Portuguese version of the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale© after the implementation of our clinical supervision in nursing model.
- Clinical Supervision in Nursing: the (un)Known PhenomenonPublication . Cruz, Sandra; Carvalho, António Luís; Sousa, P.To implement a clinical supervision model in nursing, we carry out an exploratory, descriptive and longitudinal study. We aim to publicize the results of its first phase which was focused on the chief nurses’ opinion on the clinical supervision on nursing (CSN) phenomenon. Interviews to all chief nurses (18) were conducted. Content analysis was used to data analysis. Themes and categories were found such as perspectives, relevance, conditions to CSN, among others. Results suggested that chief nurses need to improve their knowledge on CSN. However, it was clear what CSN is not or should not be to some of them.
- Clinical Supervision: Priority Strategy to a Better HealthPublication . Cruz, Sandra; Carvalho, António Luís; Sousa, P.We carried out a study with the aim to relate the implementation of a clinical supervision (CS) model with the supervised nurses’ answers to stress and the coping resources they use. 38 paired questionnaires with the Portuguese versions of the Manchester Clinical Supervision Scale© (MCSS©) and the Brief Personal Survey© (BPS©) were obtained. SPSS© version 18.0 was used to treat data. MCSS© Cronbach's alpha value for the total score was 0,938 and BPS’© was 0,60. Several correlations were found. Our study pointed out that CS can optimize the nurses’ coping resources and help them to answer to stress.
