ATLAS collaboration (3049 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA combined search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using datasets corresponding to integrated luminosities from 1.04 fb-1 to 4.9 fb-1 of pp collisions collected at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is presented. The Higgs boson mass ranges 112.9-115.5 GeV, 131-238 GeV and 251-466 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level (CL), while the range 124-519 GeV is expected to be excluded in the absence of a signal. An excess of events is observed around mH ~ 126 GeV with a local significance of 3.5 standard deviations (sigma). The local significance of H -> gamma gamma, H -> ZZ(*) -> lll'l' and H -> WW(*) -> lvl'v, the three most sensitive channels in this mass range, are 2.8 sigma, 2.1 sigma and 1.4 sigma, respectively. The global probability for the background to produce such a fluctuation anywhere in the explored Higgs boson mass range 110-600 GeV is estimated to be ~1.4% or, equivalently 2.2 sigma.
- Performance of the ATLAS Trigger System in 2010Publication . ATLAS collaboration (3049 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Magalhaes Martins, Paulo Jorge; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Morais, Antonio; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutProton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and heavy ion collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 2.76 TeV were produced by the LHC and recorded using the ATLAS experiment's trigger system in 2010. The LHC is designed with a maximum bunch crossing rate of 40 MHz and the ATLAS trigger system is designed to record approximately 200 of these per second. The trigger system selects events by rapidly identifying signatures of muon, electron, photon, tau lepton, jet, and B meson candidates, as well as using global event signatures, such as missing transverse energy. An overview of the ATLAS trigger system, the evolution of the system during 2010 and the performance of the trigger system components and selections based on the 2010 collision data are shown. A brief outline of plans for the trigger system in 2011 is presented
- Search for gluinos in events with two same-sign leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeVPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3049 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutA search is presented for gluinos decaying via the supersymmetric partner of the top quark using events with two same-sign leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum. The analysis is performed with 2.05 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity from pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No excess beyond the Standard Model expectation is observed and exclusion limits are derived for simplified models where the gluino decays via the supersymmetric partner of the top quark and in the MSUGRA/CMSSM framework. In those scenarios, gluino masses below 550 GeV are excluded at 95% CL within the parameter space considered, significantly extending the coverage with respect to existing limits. Depending on the model parameters, gluino masses up to 750 GeV can also be excluded at 95% CL.
- Search for supersymmetry in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV in final states with missing transverse momentum and $b^-$ jets with the ATLAS detectorPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3049 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe results of a search for supersymmetry in events with large missing transverse momentum and heavy flavour jets using an integrated luminosity corresponding to 2.05 fb^-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider are reported. No significant excess is observed with respect to the prediction for Standard Model processes. Results are interpreted in a variety of R-parity conserving models in which scalar bottoms and tops are the only scalar quarks to appear in the gluino decay cascade, and in an SO(10) model framework. Gluino masses up to 600-900 GeV are excluded, depending on the model considered.
- Single hadron response measurement and calorimeter jet energy scale uncertainty with the ATLAS detector at the LHCPublication . ATLAS collaboration (3049 authors); Aguilar-Saavedra, Juan Antonio; Amaral, Pedro; Anjos, Nuno; Carvalho, João; Castro, Nuno Filipe; Conde Muiño, Patricia; Do Valle Wemans, André; Fiolhais, Miguel; Gomes, Agostinho; Gonçalo, Ricardo; Jorge, Pedro; Lopes, Lourenco; Machado Miguens, Joana; Maio, Amélia; Maneira, José; Oliveira, Miguel Alfonso; Onofre, António; Palma, Alberto; Pina, João Antonio; Pinto, Belmiro; Santos, Helena; Saraiva, João; Silva, José; Soares, Mara; Veloso, Filipe; Wolters, HelmutThe uncertainty on the calorimeter energy response to jets of particles is derived for the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). First, the calorimeter response to single isolated charged hadrons is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo simulation using proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of sqrt(s) = 900 GeV and 7 TeV collected during 2009 and 2010. Then, using the decay of K_s and Lambda particles, the calorimeter response to specific types of particles (positively and negatively charged pions, protons, and anti-protons) is measured and compared to the Monte Carlo predictions. Finally, the jet energy scale uncertainty is determined by propagating the response uncertainty for single charged and neutral particles to jets. The response uncertainty is 2-5% for central isolated hadrons and 1-3% for the final calorimeter jet energy scale.
