- A search for $ t\overline{t} $ resonances using lepton-plus-jets events in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . The search is performed with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC using an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb$^{−1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $ \sqrt{s}=8 $ TeV. The lepton-plus-jets final state is used, where the top pair decays to $ {W}^{+}b{W}^{-}\overline{b} $ , with one W boson decaying leptonically and the other hadronically. The invariant mass spectrum of top quark pairs is examined for local excesses or deficits that are inconsistent with the Standard Model predictions. No evidence for a top quark pair resonance is found, and 95% confidence-level limits on the production rate are determined for massive states in benchmark models. The upper limits on the cross-section times branching ratio of a narrow Z′ boson decaying to top pairs range from 4.2 pb to 0.03 pb for resonance masses from 0.4 TeV to 3.0 TeV. A narrow leptophobic topcolour Z′ boson with mass below 1.8 TeV is excluded. Upper limits are set on the cross-section times branching ratio for a broad colour-octet resonance with Γ/m = 15% decaying to $ t\overline{t} $ . These range from 4.8 pb to 0.03 pb for masses from 0.4 TeV to 3.0 TeV. A Kaluza-Klein excitation of the gluon in a Randall-Sundrum model is excluded for masses below 2.2 TeV.

The vm-vn correlations are measured in midrapidity as a function of centrality, and, for events within the same centrality interval, as a function of event ellipticity or triangularity defined in a forward rapidity region. For events within the same centrality interval, v3 is found to be anticorrelated with v2 and this anticorrelation is consistent with similar anticorrelations between the corresponding eccentricities, ε2 and ε3. However, it is observed that v4 increases strongly with v2, and v5 increases strongly with both v2 and v3. The trend and strength of the vm-vn correlations for n=4 and 5 are found to disagree with εm-εn correlations predicted by initial-geometry models. Instead, these correlations are found to be consistent with the combined effects of a linear contribution to vn and a nonlinear term that is a function of v22 or of v2v3, as predicted by hydrodynamic models. A simple two-component fit is used to separate these two contributions. The extracted linear and nonlinear contributions to v4 and v5 are found to be consistent with previously measured event-plane correlations.

The data were taken at the LHC with a proton--proton centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.6fb$^{-1}$. The $t\bar{t} \to \mathrm{lepton+jets}$ analysis uses a three-dimensional template technique which determines the top quark mass together with a global jet energy scale factor (JSF), and a relative $b$-to-light-jet energy scale factor (bJSF), where the terms $b$-jets and light-jets refer to jets originating from $b$-quarks and $u, d, c, s$-quarks or gluons, respectively. The analysis of the $t\bar{t} \to \mathrm{dilepton}$ channel exploits a one-dimensional template method using the $m_{\ell b}$ observable, defined as the average invariant mass of the two lepton+$b$-jet pairs in each event. The top quark mass is measured to be $172.33\pm 0.75(\rm {stat}) \pm 1.02(\rm {syst})$ GeV, and $173.79 \pm 0.54({\rm stat}) \pm 1.30({\rm syst})$ GeV in the $t\bar{t} \to lepton+jets$ and $t\bar{t} \to dilepton$ channels, respectively. The combination of the two results yields $m_{\mathrm top} = 172.99 \pm 0.48({\rm stat}) \pm 0.78({\rm syst})$ GeV, with a total uncertainty of $0.91$ GeV.

Data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 have been collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The observed data are well described by the expected standard model backgrounds. Upper limits on the cross section of events with large missing transverse momentum and a Higgs boson candidate are also placed. Exclusion limits are presented for models of physics beyond the standard model featuring dark-matter candidates.

The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=8 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC in 2012. The search was done in the context of the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, in which the new particles are the lightest neutral pseudoscalar Higgs bosons (a). One of the two a bosons is required to decay to two muons while the other is required to decay to two τ leptons. No significant excess is observed above the expected backgrounds in the dimuon invariant mass range from 3.7 to 50 GeV. Upper limits are placed on the production of h→aa relative to the standard model gg→h production, assuming no coupling of the a boson to quarks. The most stringent limit is placed at 3.5% for ma=3.75 GeV. Upper limits are also placed on the production cross section of H→aa from 2.33 to 0.72 pb, for fixed ma=5 GeV with mH ranging from 100 to 500 GeV.

The search was performed using $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 20 fb$^{-1}$ at the center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=8 $TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed data are well described by the Standard Model prediction. Upper bounds on the branching ratio of $H\to Z Z_d \to 4\ell$ and on the kinetic mixing parameter between the $Z_d$ and the Standard Model hypercharge gauge boson are set in the range $(1$--$9)\times10^{-5}$ and $(4$--$17)\times10^{-2}$ respectively, at 95% confidence level assuming the Standard Model branching ratio of $H\to Z Z^* \to 4\ell$, for $Z_d$ masses between 15 and 55 GeV. Upper bounds on the effective mass mixing parameter between the $Z$ and the $Z_d$ are also set using the branching ratio limits in the $H \to ZZ_d\to 4\ell$ search, and are in the range $(1.5$--$8.7)\times 10^{-4}$ for $15
- Search for vector-like $B$ quarks in events with one isolated lepton, missing transverse momentum and jets at $\sqrt{s}=$ 8 TeV with the ATLAS detectorPublication . The analysis explores the lepton-plus-jets final state, characterized by events with one isolated charged lepton (electron or muon), significant missing transverse momentum, and multiple jets. One or more jets are required to be tagged as arising from b quarks, and at least one pair of jets must be tagged as arising from the hadronic decay of an electroweak boson. The analysis uses the full data sample of pp collisions recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the LHC, operating at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. No significant excess of events is observed above the expected background. Limits are set on vectorlike B production, as a function of the B branching ratios, assuming the allowable decay modes are B→Wt/Zb/Hb. In the chiral limit with a branching ratio of 100% for the decay B→Wt, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the vectorlike B mass is 810 GeV (760 GeV). In the case where the vectorlike B quark has branching ratio values corresponding to those of an SU(2) singlet state, the observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the vectorlike B mass is 640 GeV (505 GeV). The same analysis, when used to investigate pair production of a colored, charge 5/3 exotic fermion T5/3, with subsequent decay T5/3→Wt, sets an observed (expected) 95% C.L. lower limit on the T5/3 mass of 840 GeV (780 GeV).
