A infeção sinovial pode apresentar diferentes origens, sendo que a via hematógena é a mais comum em poldros, traumatismos por corpos estranhos penetrantes e causas iatrogénicas, como cirurgias e administrações intra-articulares. A infeção articular não apresenta predisposição racial, idade ou sexo. O diagnóstico da artrite sética faz-se com base nos sinais clínicos demonstrados pelo animal e na patologia clínica do líquido sinovial. O equino apresenta supressão de apoio no membro afetado, originando claudicação, podendo causar aumento ou não da temperatura regional do membro, edema da articulação, entre outros sinais clínicos. Esta dissertação de mestrado surge com o objetivo de realizar uma revisão bibliográfica sobre a anatomia e fisiologia das estruturas articulares, etiologias, métodos e técnicas de diagnóstico, bem como as diferentes estratégias terapêuticas para corrigir e minimizar o impacto da ocorrência desta patologia com especial referência a novas alternativas e metodologias de tratamento, atendendo ao fato de que esta patologia tem forte representação na clínica de equinos. O objetivo geral do trabalho é apresentar os principais impactos que a artrite sética pode ocasionar em equinos atletas, mediante uma revisão bibliográfica baseada em artigos científicos e pesquisas referentes ao tema.
Septic joint infection can have various origins, with microbial dissemination through the blood being the most common in foals, as well as traumas from penetrating foreign bodies, and iatrogenic causes such as surgeries and intra-articular administrations. Septic arthritis is an inflammation of the joints characterized by an infectious component that can lead to the destruction of articular cartilage, synovial fluid becomes contaminated with bacteria, fungi, or other pathogens capable of causing disease. Joint infection does not exhibit racial, age, or gender predisposition, hence all horses are susceptible to the condition, whether foals or adults. This pathology is diagnosed based on the clinical signs exhibited by the animal and the clinical pathology of the synovial fluid. It can be caused by traumas, injuries, cuts, medical procedures with contaminated instruments, or systemic diseases. Clinical signs of the condition include lameness, possible regional temperature increase, joint swelling, among others. Given this fact and its expression in equine clinical practice, this master's thesis aims to conduct a literature review on the anatomy and physiology of joint structures, etiologies, diagnostic methods and techniques, as well as different therapeutic strategies to correct and minimize the impact of this pathology, with special reference to new alternatives and treatment methodologies. The general objective of the work is to present the main impacts that septic arthritis can cause in athletic horses. The methodology of the study consisted of a literature review, based on scientific articles and research related to the topic.
