Abstract(s)
comportamento do indivíduo.
analisados no software SPSS® (Statistical Package for Social Sciences Versão 24.0).
A maioria
Introduction: Awareness of the oral condition is a factor that influences the behavior of the individual. Thus, it is essential that individuals become aware of their disease and what behaviors to adopt to prevent its progression. Objective: This study aims to evaluate patients' knowledge regarding periodontal disease and compare their self-perception with the actual periodontal state. Materials and methods: This cross-sectional observational study applied a questionnaire to 198 patients attending Egas Moniz Dental Clinic about their knowledge about periodontal disease and self-perception of their periodontal health. Some sociodemographic data were collected from the clinical processes and also the periodontal diagnosis conducted at the Periodontology consultation. The data where stored in a Microsoft Excel database and then analyzed using the SPSS® (Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 24.0). Results: The sample had an homogeneous gender distribution and most individuals (86,6%) were older than 44 years. Most had medium (40,4%) or low (38,4%) level of education as well as low socioeconomic level. The majority of the diagnoses were stage III and IV periodontitis (71%). Regarding the questions about the knowledge of periodontal diseases some basic information is still missing in a large percentage of individuals (66,2%). The majority of individuals (65,1%) is aware of their periodontal condition. Conclusion: There is still a significant amount of poorly informed individuals regarding periodontal disease. Apparently there is no relationship between the degree of knowledge and the severity of the disease. Regarding self-perception of the state of the gums, the majority of individuals are aware of the state of their gums.
