Abstract(s)

The paper approaches the house of Montedor (Viana do Castelo), which was designed by the architect João Andresen for the writer Ruben A. in the late 1940’s. The current context of adherence to and assertion of a modern approach within Portuguese architecture explains the general interpretation of a specific program, the priority given to functional aspects as well as the way a building relates by opposition to the landscape. The confrontation both with models of Brazilian architecture and proposals by Corbusier (particularly the project of the house Errázuriz, in Chile) enable us to confirm all its rational and modern characteristics, but also its unique and unexpected elements. The project attests the youth of national modern production, its feeble theoretical consistency as well as its tendency to appropriate and reinvent others’ schemes, transforming them freely according to its problems.
