Abstract(s)
The working alliance is a crucial tool that allows for positive and stable cognitive and behavioral changes. In the forensic context, despite there being a minor predisposition for collaboration with professionals, the alliance is a prerequisite for social reinstatement and prevention of criminal recidivism. Combined with this concept, there is a motivation for change since the establishment of a relationship of support between the professional and the offender increases the motivation for change in deviant behaviors. In the context of the juvenile justice system, in Portugal, there is a gap in the scientific studies developed with delinquent youth that explore the quality of the working alliance, its motivation for chance and the association between both. Therefore, the present study presents the following question: "Is there an association between the quality of the working alliance and the motivation for change in delinquent youth?". The sample of the investigation is constituted of 23 adolescents (12 females and 11 males), with ages between 13 and 18 years, in a juvenile justice facility in Lisbon. The working alliance was evaluated through the Working Alliance Inventory (WAI) and the Working Alliance Inventory for Children and Adolescents (WAI-CA). The motivation for change was analyzed through the University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA). To evaluate the level of satisfaction of the adolescent with a follow-up session, the Session Rating Scale (SRS) was used. The results of the present investigation, demonstrate that when the quality values of the working alliance with the technician increase, the motivation for change also increases. In specific, the results show that the indicators for motivation increase certain quality aspects of the relation with the technician (e.g., bond). About the age of the participants, an association between both variables was not found. Finally, as the follow-up time increases, the agreement with the proposed tasks decreases.
