Abstract(s)
The increasing incidence of depression cases in the Portuguese population and the high number of patients with nursing diagnoses of compromised self-esteem and depressive mood, observed during the day hospital and acute inpatient psychiatry unit internships, made the approach of these diagnoses pressing. Studies show that the level of self-esteem can make the difference between health and mental illness, so understanding and promoting it can be crucial in the treatment of users with depressed mood. In this context, this report intended to understand whether there is a relationship between self-esteem and depressed mood, planning and executing psychoeducational, psychotherapeutic, expressive and therapeutic interventions, in order to understand whether these can contribute to the promotion of self-esteem and decrease recurrences of depressed mood. The theoretical model of nursing used to support my practice was Peplau's Theoretical Model. A methodological triangulation approach was used through the collection of direct and indirect data from therapeutic relationships, scales application, written and verbal evaluation of the sessions, execution of a case study, execution of psychotherapeutic, psychoeducative, and expressive nursing interventions and effectuation of session notes. Even though the result of the scales did not show a significant increase in the average of the group's self-esteem, at the individual level relevant differences were found, in the promotion of self-esteem. The data taken from the therapeutic relationship, from the evaluation and session notes, allow me to state that there was an increase in self-esteem and a decrease in recurrence of depressive mood, showing that the nursing interventions performed had a positive influence on these diagnoses. The general results also demonstrated the existence of a relationship between the variables. These conclusions can be a valuable contribution to future longitudinal studies and for mental and psychiatric health nursing.
