Abstract(s)
Antidepressants are medications commonly used in psychiatry; however, due to their physiological and psychosomatic effects, they can be used as a therapeutic option in certain pathologies found in dentistry. Knowledge of the pharmacotherapeutic characteristics of this pharmacological group can be extremely important in the clinical life of Dentists. Thus, this monograph aims to carry out a literature review of the use of antidepressants in dentistry, addressing their mechanisms of action and therapeutic applications in the treatment of patients. A search was carried out in six electronic databases, with no restriction on language or publication date. 101 articles of scientific interest related to the topic were selected for use in this work. Antidepressants demonstrated a general satisfactory efficacy in the pathologies addressed, namely in the treatment of pain and discomfort present in chronic temporomandibular disorders, atypical facial pain and post-herpetic neuralgia. Studies have shown a good efficacy of antidepressants in remission of symptoms in burning mouth syndrome, and some have significantly reduced pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia. Also, in generalized anxiety, this class of drugs, show a promising therapeutic efficacy. Thus, antidepressants deserve consideration when choosing a therapeutic option, especially in cases where conventional treatments prove to be ineffective.
