Abstract(s)
Europeia.

In essence, Portugal has a lot of empirical ‘know-how’ knowledge, regarding national and/or traditional products, passed on from parents to their childs by word of mouth. It is transmitted to us quite early that wine is from Porto, ‘Pastel’ is from Belém, ‘Ginja’ liquor is from Óbidos, oranges are from Algarve and even piglet is from Mealhada. Portugal’s entry in the EU allied with technological developments made it easier to reach beyond our borders in matters of promotion and commerce of products, therefore creating a closer bond between European countries. This made possible that our products, alongside an elevated, well known and well recognized quality, could easily enter this competitive market. The quality schemes that prove, through an independente control entity, the attributes of a product, represent through the eyes of the consumers, an outstanding role regarding the guarantee of each product’s characteristics whether in the national, European or other international markets. This allows the producers to sell their products with greater value, increasing competitiveness and motivation of the small producers, so they will adhere to these quality standards and certification processes, and finally enter the market. The main objective of this project, which is the regstration of Cabrito and Borrego of Sicó as Protected Gegraphical Indications, implies studying the amount of local livestock and their conditions, their distribution and also their disponibility and adaptability to possible strutural alterations and livestock management of some farms in that geographical área. To accomplish that goal it was needed to perform inquiries with the intent of making the specification documents, as those are the basis of all this process, ending with the acceptance and registry of those products in the EU.
