Abstract(s)
2000 e 2020.
Online commerce, also known as e-commerce, is a type of commerce that aims to carry out the entire value chain of business processes, in an electronic environment, through the application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). It is a 21st century form of business, which has many advantages, as well as some barriers. Despite its permanent availability, the diversity of services that electronic platforms offer and its almost unlimited geographical reach, electronic commerce faces certain risks that are related to the feeling of security and lack of confidence on the part of consumers. However, the number of supporters of this new form of doing business has been growing, with a clear connection between the presence of e-commerce and the level of economic prosperity of a country. Several studies have been carried out, in different geographical contexts, and all with a single purpose – to prove that the presence of e-commerce has an influence on the country's level of richness, represented in the form of the national GDP. All studies confirm the hypothesis under analysis, stating that online commerce is related to GDP, positively affecting it, through the generation of new forms of employment, the increase in the volume of online sales and the increase in private and public consumption. At national level, this research shows that the online turnover is positive and strongly influenced by the number of companies that have a website, as well as the number of families with internet connection. In general, this research confirms the existence of a positive and strong relationship between e-commerce and GDP in Portugal, applying to a time period between 2000 and 2020.
