This work presents a synthesis of the historical developments in higher education in Macau. It all begins in 1513 with the arrival of Jorge Álvares in Canton. The College of St. Paul, founded in 1594 by the Jesuits, was the first Western-style university in East Asia, destroyed by fire in 1835. After 146 years, in 1981, the University of East Asia (private) emerged, inheriting the legacy of the former College, acquired by the Government, and transformed into the University of Macau (UM) in 1991. The UM has grown significantly since then, with a new campus in 2014 on reclaimed land on Hengqin Island, separated from China by a surrounding wall. This work highlights the UM’s efforts to improve its scientific research capabilities and foster technological innovation. Significant contributions from the Faculty of Law are also presented, including the publication of classic legal texts and their translation. UM’s efforts in promoting academic cooperation through resource sharing via initiatives such as Academic Library Alliances are also highlighted. In conclusion, we emphasize UM’s role in the field of Microelectronics, with an ambitious vision to expand its regional, national, and global reach in the future.
