Abstract(s)
Com o aumento do conhecimento na área da oncologia, compreende-se atualmente a
importância de incluir o Médico Dentista no planeamento e prevenção de complicações
associadas não só à doença oncológica em si mas também às consequências por vezes graves decorrentes dos tratamentos.
É assim atribuído ao Médico Dentista um papel privilegiado de apoio a este grupo de
indivíduos, quanto ao alívio da dor e desconforto, o aprimorar dos resultados terapêuticos na qualidade de cura e, não menos importante, a educação do paciente para os cuidados necessários a ter ao longo do complexo trajeto que é o tratamento oncológico.
É importante frisar a necessidade de estabelecer um plano de tratamento em diferentes
tempos de atuação (antes, durante e depois do tratamento oncológico) e o seguimento
contínuo do mesmo, de forma a evitar e/ou atenuar o aparecimento de complicações orais derivadas do tratamento oncológico, ou consequentes sequelas secundárias a este, de modo a maximizar a qualidade de vida deste paciente excessivamente debilitado e vulnerável quer a nível psíquico, quer físico.
Esta monografia propõe-se, como forma de auxílio ao Médico Dentista, a abordar as
várias vertentes de tratamento oncológico, com influência na prática clínica dentária, e as diferenças mais marcantes de cada, a influenciar a forma de abordagem durante as distintas fases do tratamento.
Due to the evolution and increasing incidence of cancer, it is essential that dentists acquire more knowledge regarding the potential risks for the oral tissues and how to approach each type of injury with the right treatment and the critical moment of intervention. The dentist has a privileged role to support and advise the patients in order to attenuate their pain and discomfort by improving their oral basic care throughout the oncological treatment. It is of utmost importance to establish a strategy for the treatment plan before, during treatment and during follow up of cancer disease to avoid the occurrence of oral complications and to improve the patient’s quality of life, in a context of both psychological and physical vulnerability. The final goal of this thesis is to guide dentists in a situation of oncological treatment by specifying different cancer scenarios and the therapeutic approach to be made at each stage of the treatment.
