Abstract(s)
quadrado.
Quando eclodiu a Grande Guerra, Portugal enviou quatro destacamentos
expedicionários para Moçambique. Estes destacamentos tinham como objetivo garantir
a defesa da colónia contra as forças da África Oriental Alemã.
Abstract This research work focused on “The Portuguese military campaigns in central and northern Mozambique 1886-1916”. The work explores the Portuguese participation in the theater of operations in Mozambique during the military campaigns of occupation and pacification of the territory, and it also analyzes the events related to the initial phase of World War I in that colony. This study aims to describe the way of action and organization of the Portuguese Armed Forces in order to contribute to the knowledge of military history of Portugal and Mozambique during this period. The methodology used for this analysis was based on historical research and collection of data related to the topic. From this analysis it is concluded that after the Berlin Conference, Portugal had to take a different position based on the deployment of military troops to ensure the effective occupation of Mozambique. To ensure the occupation of territory, Portugal not only highlighted military garrisons for the colony, as well as launched military campaigns and peacekeeping occupation of the territory. Another key factor that ensured the occupation and pacification of Mozambique was the conclusion of agreements with some European powers by Portugal. The type of enemy, who used tactics that resembled the guerrillas, forced the Portuguese military forces to adopt new ways of using the tactic of the square. When World War I broke out, Portugal sent four military detachments to Mozambique. These detachments aimed to ensure the defense of the colony against the armed forces of German East Africa.
