Abstract(s)
This research aims to address the applicability of Light Armoured Tactical Vehicles, the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV) and the High Mobility Tactical Vehicle (VAMTAC) in use by the Portuguese Army, as a means of projecting the Portuguese Rapid Reaction Force subordinated to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic. The aim of this research is to find out which of the models is best suited to this Theatre of Operations, taking into account its constraints (terrain and threat). A qualitative approach and inductive reasoning were used, supported by semi-structured interviews with military personnel who have operated with both models, and by a review of the literature pertinent to the focus of the study, under which a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) carried out for each of the vehicles. The HMMWV, frequently used by the United States armed forces, is recognised for its ability to operate in difficult terrain, having been deployed in the most varied Theatres of Operations and hostile environments. The VAMTAC, of Spanish origin, has similarities to the similarities to the HMMWV in terms of its projection capacity, standing out for its superior armour, load capacity and deterrent power. It was possible to conclude that, although both are suitable for deployment in the operational environment of the Central African Republic, the High Mobility Tactical Vehicle has different arguments for the Portuguese force to operate effectively and with the combat flexibility essential for intervention in a Peace Support Operation.
