Abstract(s)
This Applied Investigation Paper aims to understand the evolution of the tank as we know it today. In order to achieve this goal, we analyzed the way tank technology evolved, what threats it currently faces and what measures it has adopted or may adopt to counter them. In addition, this work presents a look over the future, addressing what we can expect form the next tanks, both in the world and in Portugal. Based on a inductive approach and a qualitative method, semi-structed interviews were carried out with four military personnel with experience in the area of the tank. This work adopted an inductive method, with a qualitative research strategy. Through the documental analysis and the interviews, it was concluded that the tank evolved according to different philosophies, depending on the country of origin, but always around the “Iron Trinity”. Today, drones represent the greatest threat and are even considered a game changer in current conflicts. Several projects have been presented for a new generation of tank, focusing on greater interconnection between systems, including the drones themselves, thus bringing new capabilities to this weapons system. It was also possible to conclude that Portugal should invest in the tanks it already has, updating them through a Mid-Life Upgrade. Finally, it was concluded that the basis for the tank’s development will change to the “Steel Hexagon”, manifesting itself in the greater digitalization of its components, as well as the integration of other innovative systems such as Artificial Intelligence.
