Abstract(s)
respiratória e a higiene ambiental.
This internship report arises within the scope of the curricular unit "Professional Nature Internship with Report - Module II" of the Master's degree program in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing at the Oporto's Nursing School. Its aim is to describe the process of developing common and specific competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health. It was elaborated using the educational platform of the institution, E4nursing, through an expository methodology and reflective analysis of the activities developed in different internship contexts. The internships took place in four distinct contexts: the Pediatric Emergency Department, the Pediatric Medical Ward, the Community Care Unit, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, with the objective of promoting the development of common and specific competencies of the Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health. Competency development is a continuous and dynamic process, so it is important to highlight the contribution that each internship field had to this process, considering the central theme of the project developed in Module I: promoting hand hygiene adherence in children and parents. Infection control is one of the pillars of patient safety, which in turn is an important factor in the quality of healthcare. The nurse's intervention should start at the community level and extend to the hospital setting. It is thus up to the Specialist Nurse in Child and Pediatric Health Nursing to promote children's and parents' adherence to infection control behaviors, such as hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and environmental hygiene. This intervention should take into account the child's developmental stage as well as their level of understanding in order to be effective and allow for increased health gains. I consider that I had the opportunity to develop all competencies, both common and specific, although some were more deeply explored than others due to the experiences during internship. I evaluate this process positively and take it as a starting point for further knowledge and skills development in the field of Child and Pediatric Health Nursing.
