The underlying subject of the present thesis focusses on: “Airborne Operations: evolution, current applicability and an outlook on mass parachute drops as a means of force projection”. The intention is to clarify the scope of employment of mass drops in conflicts, suggesting possible routes to follow for the improvement and a better adequacy of national Paratrooper forces in the conduct of Airborne Operations, be these solely national or of a combined nature. The main goal of this essay was to evaluate how the characteristics of national Paratrooper forces allow them to be employed in operations, analysing capabilities, organic structure, equipment and weapon systems, deployment and sustainment. Meanwhile, the analysis of past Airborne Operations was conducted to establish a benchmark in the feasibility of this type of warfighting, both in the current as in the future scenario of international conflict. The methodology applied in this essay was the hypothetical-deductive, following a strategy of qualitative research. This study allowed the understanding of how mass drop Airborne Operations evolved and their idiosyncrasies. Concurrently, it allowed the understanding of the characteristics that a modern Airborne Force must possess, as well as how a force of this nature should be tailored to accomplish a mission through the use of a parachute drop. At the end of this study we reach the conclusion that the applicability of mass drops remains current. This type of Airborne Operations presents itself as a relevant tool for the political establishment of any country, as for the Commander of a Theatre of Operations. Mass Drops represent the capacity to have a rapid and reliable answer in case of the need to project military power to a distant location at a short notice, or over sizable obstacles that could hinder a land or maritime deployment, so that influence can be exerted in that region.
