| dc.description.abstract | O presente trabalho visou estudar os fenómenos da ordem, ou da desordem, pública que marcaram indelevelmente um dos períodos mais conflituosos da História recente de Portugal: a Primeira República (1910-1926). Por conseguinte, tentamos discernir quais as circunstâncias que envolveram mudanças sociais tão repentinas e bruscas no quotidiano de então, onde a desordem pública pululava endémica. De entre amplas questões abordadas, analisamos as causas da ascensão do movimento republicano e os fundamentos da sua tomada e manutenção do Poder: o crescimento demográfico, principalmente nas cidades, a ascensão da pequena e média burguesia e a tomada de consciência política da classe trabalhadora, entre outros fatores. Para a realização deste estudo partimos de uma perspetiva institucional ligada às forças de segurança coevas, na tentativa de perceber qual foi a sua evolução histórica e o protagonismo das duas principais forças de segurança neste quadro de instabilidade social e política. Incapaz de suster e reduzir os níveis de insegurança na sociedade portuguesa, a incipiente República serviu-se da Polícia Cívica e da Guarda Nacional Republicana para conter inúmeras manifestações, greves, motins, revoltas e demais grupos sociais ligados ao proletariado revolucionário e que quase conduziram a um clima de pré-guerra civil em Portugal. A crescente violência policial então empregue na repressão destes movimentos foi amplamente contestada pelas camadas populares e as oposições políticas, como aqui evocaremos. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The present effort aimed to study the phenomena of public order, or disorder, which indelibly marked one of the most conflicting periods in Portugal’s recent History: the First Republic (1910-1926). Therefore, we tried to discern which circumstances involved such sudden and abrupt social changes in the daily life of that time, where public disorder swarmed endemic. Among the broad issues addressed, we analysed the causes of the rise of the republican movement and the fundamentals of its taking and maintenance of power: demographic growth, especially in cities, the rise of the small and medium bourgeoisie and the political consciousness of the working class, among other factors. To carry out this study, we started from an institutional perspective linked to the contemporary security forces, in an attempt to understand their historical evolution and the role of these two main corps in this context of social and political instability. Unable to sustain and reduce the levels of insecurity in the portuguese society, the incipient Republic used the Civic Police (Polícia Cívica) and the National Republican Guard (Guarda Nacional Republicana) to contain innumerable demonstrations, strikes, riots, revolts and other social assembles linked to the revolutionary proletariat, which almost led to a pre-civil war climate in Portugal. The increasing police violence then employed in the repression of these movements was widely contested by the popular groups and political opposition sectors, as we will evoke here. | pt_PT |
