Abstract(s)
Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune inflammatory chronic disease, it affects multiple human organs simultaneously or successively. The term “periodontal disease” comprises various inflammatory chronic conditions induced by bacteria, which compromise the dental pieces’ protection and/ or supporting tissues. Gingivitis and periodontitis are the two most common clinical forms of periodontal disease. The association between systemic lupus erythematosus and periodontal disease has been described and studied over the last few years, however the results and data are insufficient, and they are not enough enlightening to establish a cause effect relationship between both pathologies. Therefore, further studies are needed to establish an association between systemic lupus erythematosus and periodontal disease, and to understand the biological mechanisms through which these two pathologies interrelate.
