Nocturnal or awake bruxism constitutes the act of clenching or grinding the teeth, which may cause symptoms to the patient or not. The treatment recommended by the literature involves the use of acrylic gutters, however, alternative treatments in order to bring more comfort to the patient have been studied. Researchers have demonstrated that botulinum toxin (BoNT) is being increasingly used to control muscle hyperactivity during bruxism and several authors agree that the treatment is safe and easy to apply, which can thus be a viable alternative, because in addition to practicality, seems to reduce the symptoms of bruxism and the intensity of muscle contractions (De la Torre Canales et al., 2017; Kumar e Spivakovsky, 2018; Fernandez-Nunes et al., 2019). Although the literature brings relevant data regarding the success of BoNT as an auxiliary method for the treatment of bruxism, further studies are necessary to confirm the data, which can still be considered subjective since assessments of the toxin's success may be being performed subjectively (Ondo et al., 2018; Agren et al., 2020).
