Abstract(s)
The influence of the contents produced by the media concerning human behaviour has generated active debate and has been the target of intense academic research. In today's society, eager for information, the media become increasingly important, for its ability to create realities through the contents broadcasted on their news and by conditioning the perception of its viewers about the issues which are socially important. Given that the Portuguese State is responsible for ensuring the safety of its citizens and the police assign such functions, one of the tasks of the Portuguese Security Police is to ensure public order and tranquility of the society it serves. For many people, the only way to contact and get information about police activities is through the media. As such, this exploratory study was carried out considering the news broadcasted by television networks (RTP1, SIC, and TVI) concerning policing in major political events, during the year 2012. Through content analysis, we tried to apprehend what kind of information is made available by these media, providing grids that facilitate the comprehensibility of the police activities. Among the main results it appears that the television networks devote the majority of airtime to the explanation, characterization and description of the events and the main sources used are the members of the government.
