Abstract(s)
A DP efetua a transferência
do equilíbrio ácido base, eletrolítico e hídrico do paciente.
Renal insufficiency (RI) is today one of the most frequently found in dogs and cats. Frequently, it is necessary to use therapeutic means to prolong the life span of the animals and also to improve the quality of life during the evolution of the disease. The RI is characterized by an accumulation of nitrogenous products and by hydroelectrolytics alterations that put in cause the survival of the animal. The initial alterations due to RI can be corrected with medical treatment. However, when the alterations become refractory to medical treatment it is necessary to use peritoneal dialysis (PD) as a kidney substitution technique. The PD permits the removal of metabolites, water, electrolytes and toxins, through the administration of large amounts of dialysis solution in the peritoneal cavity. PD is based on the transfer of solutes across the semi-permeable membrane of the peritoneum by a diffusion process. It has as main objective the elimination of metabolic residues products of bloodstream and the restoration of the acid base, electrolyte and water equilibrium, of the animal.
