Abstract(s)
permitam rentabilizar melhor a água do regadio.
ambiental e social.
The Apartadura irrigation perimeter is in the village of São Salvador da Aramenha, municipality of Marvão. It covers around 400 ha and just over 250 plots managed by 88 farmers. The plots are mostly small, as 84% have less than 2 ha. Despite the variety of soils present (10 different families), practically all of them are highly suitable for irrigated agriculture, especially the alluvial soils and colluviosols which, together, cover 50% of the perimeter area. Water is supplied by the Apartadura dam which, even in recent years of drought, had no difficulty in providing all the water needed for the benefited area. Despite these exceptional conditions for irrigated agriculture, comparing the cultural occupation surveys of 2014 and 2024, there was an extensification of the agriculture practiced, with an increase in natural pasture areas and uncultivated plots. A significant number of plots are also occupied by family gardens. The remainder of the area is occupied by traditional crops, some of which have limited profitability, with, in general, a low productivity of the water used in irrigation. The main reason for this situation lies in the aging and low-skilled population, which constitutes a substantial part of farmers, and which is averse to the intensification of agricultural practices, the adoption of new, more profitable crops and more sustainable production methods. To change this trend, it is proposed to involve Marvão Municipality and the Apartadura Farmers Council to boost agriculture, attract businesspeople and young farmers from other municipalities who practice modern, more intensive agriculture, with new crops that allow better profitability of water. The reactivation of the Porto da Espada Agricultural and Forestry Cooperative and the creation of a differentiating and unifying brand “Produtos de Marvão” would be the engine for the revitalization of agriculture in the Apartadura irrigation perimeter, guaranteeing its sustainability in economic, environmental and social aspects
