Abstract(s)
With the outbreak of the pandemic, the elderly, as one of the high-risk population groups, suffered more intensely from the distance caused by COVID-19. This project has the general objective of studying the strategies implemented by the Residential Structures for the Elderly (ERPI) in the field of communication between these institutions, the elderly themselves, and their families, implemented during the current pandemic context. For the implementation of the project, the choice fell on a qualitative methodology, with the use of interviews and questionnaires applied to professionals, the elderly, and family members of two ERPI in the municipality of Torres Vedras and Monforte. The Geriatric Depression Scale was also applied to all the elderly interviewed. Through this project, we verified that physical contact is the communication strategy most valued by users and any other type of communication can be beneficial for this relationship, but always as a complement. This study provides institutions with tools to improve the relationship and communication between institutionalized elderly people and their families, both during and after the pandemic period
