Abstract(s)
O sistema imunitário tem como função proteger o organismo contra agentes patogénicos e a sua resposta é influenciada por diversos fatores, como por exemplo a dieta alimentar. A carência de micronutrientes e macronutrientes pode reduzir a eficácia da ação deste sistema.
A classe dos carotenoides é umas das principais classes de micronutrientes presentes nos alimentos que podem influenciar a atividade do sistema imunitário. Destes, e dada a sua relevância, utilizou-se um conjunto de estudos que relacionam a influência do β-caroteno e licopeno com a atividade neste sistema.
De acordo com a pesquisa realizada, os resultados obtidos nos estudos utilizados nesta monografia, sugerem que o β-caroteno e o licopeno apresentam uma atividade antioxidante, anti-inflamatória e anticancerígena. Em virtude destas atividades, tudo indica que estes micronutrientes contribuem para aumentar a atividade do sistema imunitário.
The function of the immune system is to protect the body against pathogens, and its response is influence by a number of factors, namely dietary choices. The lack of micro and macronutrients can reduce the efficiency of action of this system. The class of carotenoids is one of the main classes of micronutrients present in food products that can influence the activity of the immune system. Of these, and given their relevance, a set of studies relating the influence of β-carotene and lycopene with the activity of the immune system was used. After extensive research, the results obtained in the studies used for the writing of this monograph observe that β-carotene and lycopene possess a number of benign activities, namely antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer. In light of these activities, there is strong evidence that these micronutrients contribute for the increase of the activity of the immune system.
