Abstract(s)
The Islamic-based Justice and Development Party, AKP, has become the most successful political party since the founding of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, following the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. In the space of approximately 20 years, this party revolutionized Turkish domestic and foreign policy, from the economy to the structure of power, to the positioning of the country in the international system. The change in the structure of the State, which moved from a parliamentary political system to a presidential system, where power came to be largely concentrated in President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and the transformation of the international system, gradually more permissive and with less systemic pressure, were factors that resulted in a radical change in Turkey's political agenda, and a break with the traditional Kemalist vision of the past. This dissertation seeks, through a perspective based on Neoclassical Realism, to analyse some of these changes promoted by this new political actor in the context of domestic politics and the international system. The “new Turkey”, according to our analysis, now has a more independent nationalist identity in the international system and plays a reinforced role as a regional power, in part because of the political identity promoted by the Justice and Development Party, AKP, at the domestic level.
