Abstract(s)
Field Artillery has played a crucial role in military operations throughout history, being a determining element in battlefield superiority. However, the effectiveness of Field Artillery depends largely on the quality of the Field Artillery Firing Instruction given to soldiers. This study aimed to compare the Field Artillery Firing Instruction given in other NATO countries with the Field Artillery Firing Instruction given in Portugal, to optimize the resources used and the results obtained, as well as to improve the instruction system. This research was carried out using inductive reasoning and a mixed methodology, based on two questionnaire surveys of all Artillery Officers and Sergeants in Portugal and military personnel from various NATO countries and, at the same time, an interview survey of current and former commanders of firing batteries. This research concludes that Portuguese Field Artillery Firing Instruction faces several limitations that affect its effectiveness in preparing soldiers for contemporary challenges and that, to improve, it is necessary to implement a formal certification system; increase the frequency of training and live-fire exercises; improve shooting infrastructures; acquire more simulators and increase the quantity and type of ammunition available for training. In contrast, NATO countries' Field Artillery Firing Instruction has a comprehensive certification system; large-scale exercises; more modern and appropriate materials; as well as a variety of simulators and ammunition available for training, ensuring effective preparation of the military.
