Abstract(s)
poldros apresentados a consulta.
Veterinary nursing in Portugal is still a growing profession, however, the veterinary nurse is considered one of the main members in the clinical follow-up of patients, as they have a series of theoretical and practical knowledge. In order for an animal to be fit for surgery, the EV must recognize all the preceding procedures, just as it must be able to follow the patients' post-surgical period. Therefore, this report has been divided into two parts. In the first, the main points of action of nurses in equine clinics are developed, from the admission of the animal, to the main care in monitoring hospitalized patients. Next, all the steps that the EV should recognize pre- and postoperatively are presented in a methodical way. During approximately four months, it was possible to follow 99 clinical and surgical cases at the SCUE FMV-UL, including horses, foals, donkeys and ponies. It is possible to see that in this report there was a higher percentage of adult horses, which were grouped into two areas of veterinary medicine: internal medicine and surgery, with the same classification being adapted in the field of neonatology. These same areas were further grouped by different specialties: gastroenterology, gynecology and obstetrics, dermatology, liver diseases, neurology, cardiology, hepatology, pulmonology, orthopedics and urology. A large part of the cases followed were included in the surgical area, with 47% of the total, which in practice corresponds to 47 cases. Right after that, comes the internal medicine, with 42% (42/99 cases). Compared to neonatology, the area with the highest number of interventions was internal medicine, with 60% (6/10), followed by surgery with 40% of the total cases, which corresponds to 4 cases observed in 10 foals presented. the consultation. Pointing to the different specialties in the surgical area, orthopedics, as well as gynecology and obstetrics were the ones that stood out the most, with arthroscopy and orchiectomies being the procedures that were most performed in adult horses during this period. Regarding the specialty with the greatest medical intervention, it was again orthopedics, with claudications of unknown origin being mostly the most frequent origin in equine consultations
