Abstract(s)
This research aims to analyze the attributes of military drones and how they can be used in military operations. As an objective, we continued Barros’s et al. (2024) research, where the authors attempted to reach an academic consensus on the main attributes for categorizing military drones. As such, we intend to validate the theoretical-conceptual framework presented by Barros et al. (2024, p.89) according to the reality of the portuguese ground forces. Within the scope of the concept of drones, we sought to study and understand the concepts of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), since these are two concepts that are intrinsically linked to the concept of military drones. We found that the level of automation of equipment is an inherent factor in the concept of drones, especially because it is based on their use with a high level of automation that the concept of drones emerges. During the research, we have described and understood the use of drones by the Portuguese Army and we have verified that the attributes identified by Barros et al. (2024, p.89) are empirically valid. However, we have concluded that there is a need to add two more attributes, which are: optronic capability and drone range. The reason for this addition is that we have found that, in practice, the transmission of high-quality and live images of military operations, as well as the metric range that the aircraft can cover without losing all its capabilities and strengths, are two crucial factors for the success of a military operation. We conclude our investigation by stating that the use of drones by Portuguese ground forces is the result of an innovation process by the Portuguese Army. The development and innovation of drones are the main factors of primary interest to our institution.
