Abstract(s)
In 1999, the Napster technology enabled unlimited and free access to millions of songs on the internet, changing the recording industry forever. In the beginning of 2020, the music industry might have suffered another similar structural collapse. On March 11th, 2020, the COVID-19 outbreak was officially recognized as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Authorities worldwide recommended social distancing and home confinement. Concerts, festivals, and other social activities were indefinitely postponed or canceled all over the world. Some music producers, artists, and other professionals of the music industry faced the challenge by searching for an online format to keep live performances on. Although the internet had long been a fertile space for music, it had never been “the only option”. This research was developed in the cultural scenario of Portugal and takes a closer look at the strategies chosen by music professionals to overcome this critical situation. Through a Design Thinking method (Evolution 6²) — developed to encourage and implement creative thinking in businesses — professionals of various areas of knowledge were invited to work together and co create a pandemic proof entertainment solution for musicians and artists across the globe. The designed prototype takes trend features into consideration and uses a disruptive innovation approach to the live music industry. Moreover, the discoveries made throughout the investigation point to useful insights to guide the evolution of the live music industry towards more user-centered solutions.
