Abstract(s)
As operações navais conduzidas durante a Guerra Civil de Espanha constituem, habitualmente,
um aspecto menos valorizado do conflito, em particular quando confrontadas com a magnitude
das operações terrestres. Cientes da sua importância no desfecho militar global, procurámos
investigar e sintetizar os principais aspectos estratégicos que enquadraram a guerra naval
durante o conflito bem como a sua articulação com o cenário militar global. Neste âmbito,
procedemos à análise dos principais meios materiais e humanos disponíveis em ambas as
esquadras, sua evolução no decurso da guerra e seu emprego nos principais cenários
operacionais. Dada a importância que o conflito assumiu para o estado português vigente e a
prática de colaboração activa com um dos contendores, particularizámos igualmente a
investigação sobre elementos da política naval portuguesa na sua interacção com o desenrolar
do conflito. Procurámos sintetizar os reflexos que a situação política na República Espanhola e
as causas próximas da Guerra Civil tiveram na definição da política naval portuguesa e sua
subordinação ao programa de rearmamento do exército. Salientam-se, entre outros, aspectos
como a “revolta dos marinheiros” de 1936 e suas consequências, as operações navais de
repatriamento em portos espanhóis, a facilitação de portos portugueses para abastecimento de
material de guerra e o apoio logístico directo à esquadra nacionalista no início da guerra. Abstract: The major naval operations during the Spanish Civil War constitute a less valued trait of the
conflict, in particular when compared with the magnitude of the land operations.
Knowledgeable of their importance in the final military outcome, our purpose was to
synthesize the main strategical aspects that framed the naval war during the conflict, making
reference to their interaction with the global military scene. In this scope, we analyze the
human means and the major units used by the opposing sides, as well as their employment in
the naval theatres. Given the importance that the conflict assumed for Portugal and the known
collaboration of its government with the nationalist faction, we explored elements of the
portuguese naval policy and their interaction with the evolution of the conflict. There are
references to less well-known aspects of portuguese naval history, like the cancelation of the
thirties naval program and subsequent prioritization to the army rearmament, the “sailors
revolt” of 1936 and its consequences, the naval operations of repatriation in spanish ports, the
use of portuguese ports for logistic supply of the spanish nationalist army, and the direct
logistic support of the nationalist navy in the beginning of the war.
