Abstract(s)
A principal conclusão deste
Glaucoma designates a group of diseases associated with an increase in intraocular pressure (PIO). A prolonged increase in PIO is very harmful to the animal as it can lead to potentially irreversible blindness and cause intense pain. Therefore, studying the different therapeutic approaches to this disease is of great importance. In fact, glaucoma requires an individualised approach, and generally the combination of several different therapies in order to achieve a satisfactory result in terms of reducing PIO. The objective of this work was to analyze the most recent studies conducted on the various treatment options for glaucoma (both medical and surgical) in dogs, in order to identify the different treatment options currently available to improve the quality of life of animals suffering from this disease. The main conclusion of this work was that the management of glaucoma reveals that the use of a single treatment, whether based on medication or surgery, does not allow for long-term control of PIO. The combination of different treatments seems to be the most effective way to ensure good and/or long-term control of PIO. To achieve this, several determining factors need to be considered, such as the breed of the patient, the type of glaucoma, the state of vision at diagnosis, and the involvement of the owners. Individualising the treatment based on these criteria ensures that the treatment is tailored to achieve the best results and prognosis, both in terms of vision and quality of life.
