Abstract(s)
Cooperativism in developing countries has a very significant impact, as it is one of the keys to reducing poverty. And Sao Tome and Principe is no exception. This work aims to characterize the livestock sector, describe the historical process of creation and consolidation of livestock cooperatives/associations on the island of S. Tome and analyze the socioeconomic impact of these organizations on the quality of life of their members and the viability of their agricultural holdings. To this end, the intentional sampling technique was used to collect data from producers, trying to choose more active producers with regular quota payments, in addition to being distributed across all districts of the island. Data processing and analysis was carried out in Excel. Data analysis allows us to state that 57% of producers improved their quality of life, identifying several benefits regarding participation in this structure, highlighting the increase in income obtained, and 84% believe that the cooperative plays a crucial role in improving conditions of living conditions for all member producers, contributing to access to better education, health and housing conditions.Through the results obtained, it was clear that livestock cooperatives bring many benefits to associated producers and improve their quality and living conditions, in addition to contributing to the development of the entire community. However, it is still necessary to conduct studies regarding the perpetuation of cooperatives over time and their sustainability.
