Abstract(s)
Introduction: Elderly living in institutions have difficulty maintaining good oral hygiene and often depend on their caregivers for this. Caregivers play a pivotal role in the prevention of oral conditions; however oral health is often neglected. Studies have shown that caregivers are not always aware of the importance of oral health. Objectives: Characterize the level of oral health of the elderly residents at Egas Moniz Senior Residence in Sesimbra, whose oral and general care is given by caregivers. Also provide a training program focused on elderly oral health directed to the residence caregivers to help them understand the importance of oral health and how to improve the resident’s oral hygiene and quality of life. Materials and Methods: The study comprised a sample of 43 institutionalized and dependent elderly. A survey was conducted to measure their level of oral hygiene, before and after the residence caregivers received training in oral health. The training consisted of raising awareness for oral hygiene, oral disease prevention and oral hygiene protocols. Results: Most of the individuals under the study were between 80 and 89 years of age (72.1%). Of the study participants, 21 (48.8%) used a prosthesis. After 1 month, significant improvements were observed in the GI (p = 0.003) and in mucosal inflammation (p = 0.043). No statistically significant improvements were found in the PI (p = 0.053) nor in the hygiene of the prosthesis from both the upper (p = 1,000) and lower (p = 0.059) jaw. Conclusion: The results, in part, reinforce the effectiveness of the caregivers training and the importance of the methods taught. However, it is important to note that continuous and expert-supported training would be beneficial for the oral health of the elderly and consequently for an improvement in their quality of life.
