Objetivo: Avaliar a influência do tratamento ortodôntico fixo na saúde gengival de crianças e adolescentes, comparando parâmetros clínicos e hábitos de higiene oral antes e durante o tratamento.
Materiais e Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo observacional longitudinal, executado numa amostra de 16 crianças e adolescentes com idades compreendidas entre os 10 e os 18 anos que frequentaram a Clínica Dentária Egas Moniz entre fevereiro e julho de 2021. O presente estudo desenvolveu-se em dois períodos temporais distintos, antes da cimentação da aparatologia ortodôntica fixa (T0) e 2 meses após a cimentação (T1). Em ambos os períodos, em cada participante foi realizada a medição do Índice de Placa (IP) e Índice Gengival (IG), bem como aplicado um questionário por forma a avaliar os hábitos de higiene oral, determinar possíveis alterações dos mesmos e dificuldades sentidas após o início do tratamento ortodôntico. A análise estatística dos dados recolhidos foi realizada através do software IBM SPSS Statistics.
Resultados: A amostra apresentou uma média de idade de 13,7 anos e uma maior prevalência de indivíduos do sexo masculino (69%). Relativamente aos índices avaliados observou-se um aumento dos valores médios de IP e IG, de T0 para T1. Entre a primeira e a segunda consulta, verificaram-se diferenças estatisticamente significativas entre os valores médios de IP (p < 0,05). Relativamente aos valores médios de IG, o aumento não foi identificado como sendo estatisticamente significativo (p > 0,05).
Conclusões: Dentro das limitações deste estudo, foi possível concluir que o tratamento ortodôntico fixo conduziu a um aumento significativo da acumulação de placa, tendo repercussões na higiene e saúde oral. Não foram verificadas diferenças estatisticamente significativas ao nível do Índice Gengival. Futuras investigações deverão abranger amostras de maiores dimensões e ser realizadas durante um intervalo de tempo mais alargado.

The statistical analysis of the collected data was performed through the IBM SPSS Statistics software. Results: The sample had a mean age of 13,7 years and a higher prevalence of males (69%). Regarding the evaluated indexes, there was an increase in the mean values of PI and GI, from T0 to T1. Between the first and second appointment, there were statistically significant differences between the mean PI values (p < 0,05). Regarding the mean GI values, the increase was not identified as statistically significant (p > 0,05). Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, it was possible to conclude that fixed orthodontic treatment resulted in a significant increase in plaque accumulation, with repercussions on oral hygiene and health. There were no statistically significant differences in the Gingival Index. Future investigations should cover larger samples and be carried out for a longer period.
