Abstract(s)
Objectivos
Background: To evaluate and determine the prevalence of gingival health in a population of children and adolescents from the Clínica Dentária Egas Moniz (CDEM), to identify the relationship between different oral hygiene techniques and gingival health, and finally to evaluate the association of flossing with gingival health. Materials and Methods Fifty-six CDEM patients were observed and surveys were applied to those included in the study. The inclusion criteria used were as follows: individuals aged between 6 and 18 years of both genders, with fixed or removable orthodontic appliances. At the consultation, the plaque index (PI) and gingival index (GI) applied to all teeth on four faces (mesial, vestibular, distal and lingual/palatine) were evaluated. Results The sample consisted of 30 female and 26 male individuals. Significant differences were identified for the PI values in the comparison between genders, while for the GI, in the same comparison, no significant differences were observed. Significant differences in PI values were identified only in tooth 24. In the remaining teeth no significant differences in both PI and GI values were identified. Conclusions The results show that although no significant differences were identified in the gingival health of the sample of children and adolescents with orthodontic appliances according to the interproximal cleaning methods, it is possible to determine that there is a greater accumulation of plaque in these patients, which can be decreased with oral cleaning instructions and instruments.
