O trabalho aqui apresentado, explora o papel dos Assistentes Sociais no Apoio ao Luto das famílias cuidadoras de pessoas idosas na região Alentejo, uma área caracterizada por um elevado índice de envelhecimento populacional. A investigação visa compreender as perceções, as competências e as reflexões dos profissionais de Serviço Social na prestação de apoio às famílias cuidadoras de pessoas idosas durante o processo de luto.
Este trabalho reforça a importância de uma abordagem holística na Gerontologia, sublinhando a relevância do Serviço Social na promoção do bem-estar das famílias cuidadoras de pessoas idosas em contexto de fim de vida. Além disso, contribui para a reflexão sobre a melhoria das práticas profissionais e o desenvolvimento de políticas sociais que valorizem esta dimensão do trabalho dos Assistentes Sociais.
A investigação do processo de luto, um fenómeno multifacetado e complexo, contribui para o aprofundamento das teorias sobre as reações emocionais, psicológicas e comportamentais das pessoas em luto. Assim, este estudo não só irá ampliar o conhecimento existente sobre o luto, como também irá enriquecer a literatura académica com uma visão detalhada e precisa deste fenómeno, segundo o parecer dos Assistentes Sociais através do seu próprio testemunho.
A pesquisa adotou uma abordagem qualitativa, baseada em entrevistas semiestruturadas com Assistentes Sociais que atuam em contextos diversos, como Unidades de Cuidados Paliativos, Unidades de Cuidados Continuados Integrados, Unidades de Cuidados na Comunidade, Cuidados Hospitalares e Estruturas Residenciais para Pessoas Idosas. Os dados, recolhidos por meio de entrevistas aos profissionais, foram analisados através do método de análise de conteúdo.
The work presented in this dissertation explores the role of Social Workers in supporting the bereavement process of family caregivers of older adults in the Alentejo region, an area characterised by a high rate of population ageing. The research aims to understand the perceptions, competencies, and reflections of Social Work professionals in providing support to family caregivers of elderly individuals during the grieving process. This work reinforces the importance of a holistic approach within Gerontology, highlighting the relevance of Social Work in promoting the well-being of family caregivers of older adults in end-of-life contexts. Furthermore, it contributes to the reflection on improving professional practices and developing social policies that value this dimension of Social Workers' roles. The investigation of the bereavement process, a multifaceted and complex phenomenon, contributes to the deepening of theories regarding the emotional, psychological, and behavioural reactions of grieving individuals. Thus, this study not only expands the existing knowledge on grief but also enriches the academic literature with a detailed and accurate perspective of this phenomenon, based on the direct testimony of Social Workers. The research adopted a qualitative approach, based on semi-structured interviews with Social Workers operating in diverse contexts, such as Palliative Care Units, Integrated Continuing Care Units, Community Care Units, Hospital Care, and Residential Structures for Older People. The data, collected through interviews with the professionals, were analysed using the content analysis method.
