Abstract(s)
In recent years, there has been a strong media focus on the fact that the population is beginning to feel the positive and negative effects of the growth of tourism in historic districts. The current dissertation focuses on the sustainability of tourism in Lisbon, more specifically on how tourism growth has affected or not the rehabilitation of the whole area of Baixa Pombalina. After a brief reflection on tourism in urban centres and on the main effects perceived in them in a global way, we move on to a more specific analysis of the Baixa Pombalina area and the main changes in recent years. We also tried to understand the effects perceived by the main actors of Baixa Pombalina also in face of this growth of the last years. As explained throughout the work, the main objectives of the work had to be adapted due to the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation has prevented us from taking our original approach to inquire with the main actors of the Baixa and has led us to re-evaluate the situation through studies already published and also using the information that has been made available by the press. As this is a topical issue that has had a huge impact on this work and on the life of society in general, we have included a brief chapter on the effects on tourism with the new reality of COVID-19. Here we contextualize the whole situation that has marked the year 2020 and outline the current picture, as well as what the future trends in tourism might be and how they will influence historic urban areas.
