Abstract(s)
This study analyses the 8X8 Wheeled Armoured Vehicle platform within the framework of the development of the Portuguese Army's Next Generation Land Force. The main objective was to propose lines of action within the material development vector that enhance it as a valid asset in the future battlefield. The research followed a qualitative methodology, employing documentary analysis and semi-structured interviews for data collection, and adopted the case study as the research design. The findings revealed the need to modernize the PANDUR II 8X8 Wheeled Armored Vehicle to meet the challenges of the future operational environment. The analysis enabled the identification of both vulnerabilities and potentialities of the platform, supporting a set of lines of action to be implemented by 2034. These are focused on optimizing the vehicle through improvements in the pillars of mobility, protection, lethality, and connectivity. For the post-2034 period, the replacement of the platform is recommended, with a new system that incorporates the identified technologies and characteristics, based on the conceptual frameworks of the “steel-hexagon” and the “onion of survivability”. It is concluded that, despite structural limitations, phased modernization aligned with technological trends can ensure the platform’s relevance to the Portuguese Army's Next Generation Land Force.
