The promotion of the individual’s autonomy during the rehabilitation process requires an approach centredm not only on the person receiving carem but also on their family, recognising it as an essential therapeutic resource for the continuity of care. The family, as a support network, assumes an active role in the individual’s daily life, being fundamental in adopting health-promoting behaviours and preventing complications. The Specialist Nurse in Rehabilitation Nursing, by virtue of their specific competencies, is qualified to intervene with individuals presenting functional limitations and with their families, fostering empowerment for self-care, functionality, and active participation in the care plan. By recognising the family as a partner in the therapeutic process, the Specialist Nurse contributes to a more effective, safer, and reality-based rehabilitation process for the patient. As a general objective, the development of scientific, technical, ethical, and human competencies for specialised care of individuals requiring rehabilitation was defined, with a particular focus on interventions directed at the family. Through the identification of needs across different internship contexts, objectives were outlined and familyempowerment strategies were implemented to promote the individual’s autonomy and ensure continuity of care at home and within the community. The activities carried out across the various internship settings, grounded in up-to-date scientific evidence and allied to critical and reflective thinking, made it possible to consolidate specialised competencies in Rehabilitation Nursing, as well as master’s-level competencies. This experience fostered a critical, humanised, and person- and familycentred practice, contributing to the quality of care and professional excellence.
