Abstract(s)
Academic paper aimed at discussing the contribution of local traditions to the attraction of experiential tourists, with a focus on the case studies of activities surrounding the acculturation of the Luso-Brazilian Carnival in Mealhada and the gastronomic product of Sea Urchins from Ericeira. This study seeks to investigate the role of active participation in identity-based regional events as an anchor factor for visitor satisfaction and attraction to the territories in question, namely the city and municipality of Mealhada, and the town of Ericeira, in the municipality of Mafra. The selection of these locations is grounded in the richness and vitality of their intangible heritage, widely appreciated and internationally recognised, which is celebrated through emblematic local events.Regarding methodological procedures, a qualitative and exploratory approach was adopted, complemented by the analysis of two surveys conducted directly with samples of 320 participants at the 2024 Mealhada Carnival and 320 participants at the 2024 International Sea Urchin Festival. In the latter case, due to the specificity of the event, interviews were also conducted with local stakeholders. To assess the relationship between active experience and participant engagement, a Pearson correlation analysis was conducted between the variables. Additionally, a comparative analysis was carried out between tourist overnight stays in the referenced municipalities during the event periods and the statistics recorded in the two weeks following these events in previous years.
