Abstract(s)
This internship report was prepared as part of a Curricular Internship, which is part of the second year of the master’s course in Safety and Hygiene at Work, at the Polytechnic Institute of Setubal. It was carried out at Siderurgia Nacional do Seixal, SA, with a duration of six months. The developed task that originated the theme of the work was the verification of automotive mobile equipment from external entities that provide services to the steel industry. The main objective of the work is to analyze the safety conditions of the steelworks' work equipment, in accordance with community legislation. About 206 automotive equipment from external companies were verified, in which a little more than 1/3 of the equipment showed some non-conformity (NC). About 45% of non-conformities were due to non-compliance with verifications, 36% resulted from failures in the documentation of the equipment and 19% were found to be both situations. In inspections of industrial facilities, it was found that the main resulting risks were mechanical, thermal, and electrical contacts, falls in accesses, drop of suspended loads and thermal exposure. The suggested preventive measures involve maintenance, checks and inspections of equipment and manufacturing facilities and essentially training and informing workers. From a sample of 178 accidents of 1 year and 8 months, 78 involved work equipment, in which only 8 of the accidents involved automotive mobile equipment, the rest involving fixed machines, other mobile equipment, access equipment, lifting accessories and tools. Some instruments related to the safety of work equipment were developed. Of these, the Work Equipment Registration instrument is the most important, which has allowed the registration of all automotive mobile equipment from external companies. It is concluded that the verification/inspection of equipment is essential as a preventive measure to avoid the occurrence of accidents.
