A socialização étnica refere-se ao processo de desenvolvimento pelo qual a criança adquire os comportamentos, perceções, valores e atitudes de um grupo étnico e passa a ver-se a si própria e aos outros como membros desse grupo. Consideramos que o conteúdo das crenças parentais sobre socialização étnica pode ajudar a estabelecer o papel da identidade étnica da mãe no conteúdo e estrutura das suas crenças sobre socialização étnica e educação das crianças de minorias étnicas que frequentam as escolas portuguesas. Neste estudo, apresentam-se os resultados de uma investigação com 68 mães cabo-verdianas, residentes em Portugal, com filhos a frequentar o 1.º Ciclo do Ensino Básico sobre as suas crenças sobre socialização étnica e educação. Num primeiro passo, caracteriza-se a identidade étnica das mães e os seus preditores para, num segundo passo, se identificar o conteúdo e a estrutura das suas crenças. Por último, estabelece-se a função diferenciadora da identidade étnica materna na estrutura e conteúdo das suas crenças sobre socialização étnica e educação dos filhos. Nas conclusões, discutimos as especificidades do processo de socialização das crianças de origem africana a residir em Portugal.
Ethnic socialization is the developmental process thereby children acquire behaviours, perceptions, values and attitudes of an ethnic group, and start to perceive themselves as members of that group. We propose that the content of the parental beliefs regarding ethnic socialization can help to established the role of the mothers’ ethnic identity in the structure and content of the socialization beliefs and education of their children who attend Portuguese schools. We report the result of a study with 68 mothers from Cabo Verde residents in Portugal, with children in the primary school regarding their beliefs about ethnic socialization and education. We first described the ethnic identity of mothers and their predictors, and subsequently identified the content and structure of their beliefs. Finally, we established the role of the mothers’ ethnic identity in the structure and content of the socialization beliefs and education of their children. We discuss the specificities of the socialization of children with African origin living in Portugal.
