Abstract(s)
transformação morfológica do tecido urbano. A escolha deste estudo recaiu
Abstract: The City of Barcelos, located in the North of Portugal, more precisely in the District of Braga, municipality of Barcelos, was the case study selected for this work focused on the transformation of the morphological urban fabric. The choice of this study fell primarily on the importance of its monuments and historical heritage. Nevertheless, the main goal arises from the major changes occurred in the last fifty years, due to social, economic and political factors, especially after the establishment of democratic regime on April 25, 1974 that has made a remarkable transformation in its urban form, thus causing large morphological differences between the center and the periphery. The demographic growth was driven by estate speculation, by the dynamism of civil construction, by the process of immigration to rural areas, caused by the entry of Portugal in the European Economic Community in 1986 (European Union today), mainly due to an increase of activities in the primary, secondary or tertiary sector. The general interest of this dissertation lies on the transformation of the urban form of Barcelos city, addressing the analysis through a diachronic reading of successive morphological changes. The proposed objectives are focused on indicating the main factors and urban elements that had structured the urban fabric of the city, thus allowing to determinate the resulting morphology that characterizes it today, in addition to identifying their permanence and morphological variables. The methodology is based on the interpretation of designed and written data, intersected and overlapped. It also deals with the political, economic and social contextualization of the 1960s and performs the morphological analysis of certain periods, in a physical and interpretive reading of the decay of urban form. It is based on documents analysis, on the data collected in public bodies, on some exploratory interviews, on official and private documents, cartographies, literary publications, photographs and also items of direct observation. The morphology implies convergence and use of data that came from different subjects: economics, sociology, history, geography, architecture, etc. It also implies the comparison of data from different areas to serve as a perception of the urban form, its formation process and its transformation over time.
