Digital transformation in healthcare constitutes a central challenge for contemporary care, requiring nurses to combine technical competences with personal and relational attributes that support the critical and effective adoption of digital technologies. Thus, it is essential to understand the digital profile of Portuguese nurses, with a view to identifying their contribution to the development of strategies for leadership, training, and professional development. Accordingly, the main objective of this study is to assess the level of digital competences of Portuguese nurses and to analyse their relationship with personality traits and soft skills, while also identifying training needs in this field. This is a quantitative, descriptive–correlational, and cross-sectional study. The sample comprised 356 nurses. Data collection was carried out using three validated instruments: the Digital Competence Assessment Questionnaire based on the European Digital Competence Framework for Citizens, the Big Five Personality Inventory, and the Soft Skills Inventory. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics software (version 30.0). The results showed that most nurses present an intermediate level of digital competence, with higher proficiency in data literacy and communication and collaboration, but with more pronounced weaknesses in digital content creation and, above all, in digital security. In terms of personality, Openness to Experience emerged as the trait most strongly associated with digital competences, albeit with weak intensity. In relation to soft skills, the dimensions of Adaptability, Analysis and Interpretation, and Interpersonal Interaction were significantly related to the perception of digital competences. Predictive analysis confirmed that personality and soft skills together explain only part of the variability in digital competences, with greater significance in the domain of self-perception than in objective proficiency. In conclusion, the digital competences of Portuguese nurses result from the interaction between technical factors, individual characteristics, and interpersonal competences. These findings reinforce the need for tailored training programmes, with an emphasis on digital security and the development of soft skills. Furthermore, they highlight the role of nursing leadership in promoting digital capacity, ensuring inclusive and sustainable learning environments aligned with national and international priorities for digital transformation in healthcare.
