Abstract(s)
The final internship of the Veterinary Nursing’s degree was carried out by the student at AniCura Alma Veterinária Veterinary Hospital, where 1005 companion animals and 27 new companion animals were attended to. During the internship, the student was assigned to various departments, including veterinary assistance, surgery, veterinary nursing appointments, and hospitalized animals care, with the general objective of following the daily routines of the hospital and performing tasks in the area of veterinary nursing. Pain management in companion animals is essential in Veterinary Medicine. The in-depth study of the physiology of pain, as well as the development of skills for its recognition and evaluation, are extremely important. The research carried out regarding different types of pain, pain scales, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, allowed a better understanding regarding pain management, as well as the importance of developing personalized pain management plans, aiming to improve animal welfare and the results in recovery. Three clinical cases were also reported, one about chronic pain and two about acute pain, to better understand the differences between these types of pain, as well as the distinctions in diagnosis and treatment. The veterinary nurse plays a crucial role in the evaluation and recognition of pain, whether in emergency triage situations, post-surgical follow-up appointments, or cases of hospitalization. Comprehensive assessment of the patient's behavioral and physiological aspects, using available Pain Scales, is essential to ensure that the treatment plan is appropriate to the condition of each animal.
