By the end of the nineteen century, the Portuguese intellectual elite regarded popular education as a way to achieve success and civilization. Influenced by positivism, this elite defended the scientific education of the people, which transmitted useful knowledge. From 1881 onwards, David Corazzi edited the “Bibliotheca do Povo e das Escolas”. It is a collection of popular nature addressed to a wide audience of educated Portuguese and Brazilians, but lacking scientific and literary education. We intend to insert this collection in the context of the nineteen-century popular editions, connecting it to the practice of appropriation, production and circulation of cultural models and recognizing it as a product of editorial strategy aiming education and dissemination of science. We chose a qualitative approach focused on documental research and analysis of the content of eighteen fascicles of this collection which provide important data for this investigation. This study permits to reveal the authors’ discourses, transmitting civility and useful knowledge about practices of health and hygiene in the domestic world. Until 1913, the “Bibliotheca do Povo e das Escolas” accomplished the educative and civilizing mission and made possible the circulation of a corpus of scientific knowledge between Portugal and Brazil.
