Objective: To carry out a morphological and dimensional analysis of endodontic irrigation needles from different manufacturers, marketed in Portugal, comparing them with the ISO 9626:2016 standard. External and internal diameter, wall thickness, dimensional consistency of the cannula, working length, and side ports were assessed. Materials and methods: Forty-eight needles from four distinct models were evaluated: Side-port Irrigating Tip, Coltene CanalPro Irrigation Probe (Coltène/Whaledent AG, Altstätten, Switzerland), Max-i-Probe (Dentsply Rinn, Elgin, IL, USA), and Flexible Irrigation Needle (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland). The analysis used optical microscopy with digital image analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), on cross-sections obtained after embedding the samples in epoxy resin. Results: Differences were observed between models regarding external diameter, internal diameter, wall thickness, working length, and side ports. The external diameter was not constant along the cannula in the metallic models. The three metallic models showed internal diameters consistent with the minimum requirements of ISO 9626:2016 for thin wall. Only one metallic model significantly exceeded the maximum limit of 320 µm, the remaining two not differing from this limit. The Flexible Irrigation Needle showed the highest values of external diameter, internal diameter, and wall thickness, and was distinguished by its polymeric configuration and a nominal 4% taper. Conclusion: The results highlight discrepancies between some 30G models and the ISO 9626:2016 standard, suggesting that the commercial 30G designation alone does not guarantee dimensional uniformity. The particular features of the Flexible Irrigation Needle reveal the limitations of directly applying ISO 9626:2016 to devices with innovative materials and geometries, reinforcing the need to adapt normative references to the technological evolution of these devices.
